Some people would call it a cult, and Christa Bell the high priestess of a transgressive new religious movement. Within the space of an hour, Bell initiates an unsuspecting audience into what she calls the original spiritual expression of humanity: The exaltation of Coochie.
Reading from scriptures she’s collected from her own hilarious experiences with patriarchal Gods and their opinions of women, through comedic monologue, spoken word poetry, and engaged, audience-based performance games, CoochieMagik explores the point at which women’s sexual and spiritual self-esteem intersects with political access and entitlement. CoochieMagik is a meditation on the creative power of the female orgasm, and how to harness and direct it in a world shaped and controlled by the desires of masculine Gods.
CoochieMagik challenges internalized misogyny and the idea of “man” as the image of God, by humorously exploding patriarchal religious and moral mythologies, and co-creating, with her audience, a revolutionary holy communion and theology, based on the bodies and experiences of women. This work is a critical act of resistance against the institutionalization of misogyny in the western philosophical canon. Through the judicious use of CoochieMagik, we begin to envision a world made in the image of woman.
CoochieMagik: A SpokenWord Musical Comedy is available to be performed as a 30 minute excerpt, a 45 minute performance presentation and an hour-long theater show.
